The Directions Page:

From time to time, events are scheduled such that they can be difficult to locate in time or space for some reason.  Directions to events that can be located easily are typically included in the calendar information item on the activities page.

When more complex directions are helpful, they will be posted here.  In order to make this a more useful resource, directions will generally not be deleted, even after the event is passed.  When directions for something new are posted, they will always be near the top, so directions to past events will scroll farther and farther down the page, but still be available as an archive.

Mensa Softball Game - Coulson Field

Instructions for getting to the Larry H. Coulson Field (inside Chandler Park) from OKC:

While these directions were written primarily for the benefit of Central Oklahoma Mensa members that may not be familiar with west Tulsa and/or the inside of Chandler Park, there are perhaps some Eastern Oklahoma Mensa Group members that aren't familiar with the details of getting to and around inside Chandler Park.  If you want some telephone help, call Brian Jackson at 918-630-5723 and he will try to assist.

Travel to Tulsa using either Hwy 66 or Interstate 44. Regardless of the method chosen, those two roads will converge to one throughway before the change to another highway is done.

Once you are in west Tulsa, pay attention to the highway signs showing how to get onto Highway 75 northbound. Use the clover leaf exchange to make that transition. Proceed north on Highway 75 until you come to exit 3A which is for Southwest Boulevard. You will pass an exit marked for West 41st and Union Avenue that you don't take.

As you proceed down the exit ramp for Southwest Boulevard, take the left most lane. You will come to a traffic light where the ramp meets Southwest Boulevard. Turn left and you will then be going north on Southwest Boulevard. Go about 1-1/2 blocks and keep in the left lane as you come to the very next stop light. Turn left and you will be going west on 23rd Street. Almost immediately the roadway will begin to curve to the right and soon you will find yourself facing north and stopped at an intersection with west 21st Street. There are no traffic signals here.

Turn left an you will be going west on 21st Street. Now you can proceed west along 21st Street until Chandler Park itself becomes visible. As you go down this road, you will see some signs for local businesses such as Koch Truck Station and Peak Sulpher Inc. on the right hand side. When you are pretty close the the park you will be able to see the words "Chandler Park" in white letters on the hillside. Once that comes into pretty good view, you need to move into the left turn lane.

Turn left and proceed a short distance and then turn right to enter the park itself. You will be following a curved road up the hill. Near the top of the hill the road becomes mostly straight. Proceed down this road watching for some park traffic control gates. The first gate you actually see is across a road that splits off to the right from the main road. Ignore that path and continue going straight until you come to the next set of gates. Go through those gates and continue down the road. On the right you will pass a picnic shelter built up on a concrete base. A little past that you will see a sign that says "Pedestrians Have Right of Way". Right about at that sign there is a road branch off to the left you can take.

As you proceed down the left branch road you will pass some areas under construction. Eventually you will see the Coulson Field on the left. To the right you may notice a childrens' play area with blue and yellow playground equipment. There is also a picnic shelter in the immediate area as well as a building with rest rooms. The shelter doesn't have a number on it but it does have signs that say it's reserved Monday through Friday for Chandler Park Day Camp.

Instructions for getting to the monthly meeting site from Coulson Field:

Retrace your steps to get out of the park and back onto west 21st Street. Proceed east on this road until you have the opportunity to make the right hand turn and get back onto road that turns into west 23rd Street. Follow that road around to the left and you will soon be back at the intersection of west 23rd street and Southwest Boulevard. You can turn right and proceed south down Southwest Boulevard a short distance.

You will soon come to an turn-off from Southwest Boulevard where you can turn right and then immediately choose to get on Highway 75 either southbound or northbound. Take the left branch (to get on Hwy 75 southbound) and continue south to the intersection with Interstate 44. Use the clover leaf exchange to get onto Interstate 44 eastbound.

Follow Interstate 44 eastbound until you get to the exit for Harvard Avenue. Along that path you will pass exits for Elwood Avenue, Riverside Drive, Peoria Avenue, and Lewis Avenue that you don't take. When you exit for Harvard, you will actually be brought down to east 51st Street slightly west of Harvard Ave. Turn left and you will be going east on 51st Street. Proceed in the left lane to the intersection with Harvard Ave. Turn left there and you will be going north on Harvard Ave.

As you start going north on Harvard, you will first pass under the highway that you just go off of. Once under Interstate 44 you will pass through the intersection with the highway's north service road. After that, you can turn right into either of the next two driveways and then proceed east through the parking lots to Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler which will be in plain view.

Instructions for getting to the monthly meeting site directly from OKC:

You can take parts from both of the instruction sets above. Once in west Tulsa past where Hwy 66 and Interstate 44 have converged, proceed east to the Harvard Ave. exit. Follow instructions above for access to Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler.

Instructions for getting back to OKC from the meeting site:

You can get on the north service road of Interstate 44 directly from the restaurant parking lot. Proceed west to the intersection with Harvard Ave. and pass through. Stay in the left lane once you're through the intersection and take the ramp up onto Interstate 44. Proceed westbound on Interstate 44 through west Tulsa and onward to OKC following either Interstate 44 (toll road), or Highway 66 (free road).
